As residents in and around the city of Franklin Springs continue to speak out regarding wastewater and industrial development concerns, the city's police department says it is elevating security ahead of Tuesday's city council meeting.
The Franklin Springs Police Department posted to social media Monday afternoon, saying "threatening posts" online led to the decision.
"The Franklin Springs City Council meeting scheduled for April 15 is now being treated as an elevated security event," the police department post said. "Additional measures are being put in place that will alter building entry points, traffic flow, parking, and more."
The police department posted screenshots of multiple Facebook posts that made allusions to "mob" activity at the Tuesday meeting.
Increasing numbers of residents have been speaking out during recent Franklin Springs City Council meetings, as well as the Franklin County Board of Commissioners meetings, amid concerns over an intergovernmental agreement to authorize a new wastewater treatment facility, as well as rumors of a proposed poultry rendering plant.
Tuesday's city council meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Franklin Springs City Hall on W. Main Street at Lions Place.
