A now-former Franklin County jailer was arrested last week after investigators said she provided several contraband items to an inmate.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigations issued a statement Tuesday saying Emaleigh Smith, age 22 of Elberton, was arrested on Thursday, May 22. The GBI was asked to investigate Smith by the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.
"Agents found a quantity of THC edibles and alcohol in Smith's car which was parked at the jail," the GBI's release said. "Smith stated that she had provided alcohol, nicotine, and THC edibles to inmate Qwelon Johnson, age 33, of Lavonia, GA, multiple times."
Smith is facing charges including providing items prohibited for possession by inmates and violation of oath of office. Johnson was also charged with possession of prohibited items by an inmate.
Smith was booked into the Franklin County Detention Center and has since been released on bond. Sheriff's office officials said Smith was terminated after the GBI's investigation.
