By AccessWDUN Staff

A Gwinnett County man was killed after he was involved in a construction accident Thursday near downtown Fort Lauderdale.

Florida news station Local 10 News reported Jorge De La Torre, 27, of Gwinnett County, was working at the site near the Southeast Third Avenue Bridge.

The outlet reported a piece of a crane was being hoisted to the top of a nearby building for construction purposes when that piece came crashing down.

Torre fell with that piece and died as a result.

The crane also struck a car on the ground, and another vehicle nearby was damaged. One person on the ground sustained minor injuries.

A GoFundMe page created by Torre's wife described Torre as a father of two young children, ages two and five.

"Jorge, a Georgia native, like many times before traveled to Florida for work, but unfortunately our family will not be blessed to see him come home safely this time," wrote Joselyn Farias on GoFundMe. "Jorge, was a loving father, brother, son, and partner. He was so loved by many, he never met a stranger, was so caring and so selfless. To have known him was a blessing, to be on his a life a joy and he will be Dearly missed, and forever be loved."

The page had raised over $7,000 as of Tuesday morning.
