A 23-year-old man died Saturday afternoon while swimming in Lake Lanier at Lanier Park in Gwinnett County when he went under the water and never resurfaced.

The incident occurred just after 3 p.m. Saturday, prompting a response from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the Gwinnett Fire Department and the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.

Edgar Steven Cruz Martinez, 23, was swimming at Lanier Park when he went under the water and did not resurface, DNR Officer Mark McKinnon said Sunday.

Soon after arrival, response crews were able to locate Martinez in approximately 10 feet of water using a boat-mounted sonar device.

Rescue swimmers with Gwinnett Fire recovered the body.
