The Georgia Mountains YMCA and Margaritaville at Lanier Islands recently joined forces to host a community-focused water safety event at Fins Up Water Park.
YMCA officials said 150 YMCA summer camp students showed up for a fun day to teach essential water safety skills.
"Our goal is to equip children with the knowledge and skills they need to be safe in and around water," Lane Walberg, CEO of Georgia Mountains YMCA, said. "By partnering with Margaritaville at Lanier Islands, we were able to provide a memorable experience that combines education with fun."
Campers took part in the YMCA’s Safety Around Water program, which teaches skills like "Jump, Push, Turn, Grab" and "Swim, Float, Swim," designed to help them respond if they find themselves in water unexpectedly.
The program includes lessons on recognizing water hazards, life jacket safety and understanding how to assist others in distress safely.
"We’re proud to support programs that prioritize safety, learning, and community connection," Maggie Anderson, Marketing Manager at Margaritaville at Lanier Islands, said. "This partnership reflects our ongoing commitment to creating a safe and welcoming environment for all our guests."
The YMCA’s Safety Around Water Program has played a key role in lowering the risk of drowning. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children aged 1 to 4 who take formal swimming lessons can reduce their risk of drowning by as much as 88%.
“We’re incredibly grateful for our partnership with Margaritaville at Lanier Islands,” Walberg said. “Their support helps us create unforgettable experiences while teaching life-saving water safety skills. Together, we’re making a real difference in the lives of local children and families.”
