Gainesville officials report weekend sewer spill into Flat Creek

By Austin Eller News Director

The Gainesville Department of Water Resources was able to stop a sewer overflow Sunday into Flat Creek, which flows into Lake Lanier.

According to a press release from the agency, the City received a call at about 2 p.m. Sunday about a sewer spill on Swann Drive.

City staff determined a sewer choke caused the discharge. The correction was made and flow was restored by about 4:15 p.m.

The department said about 600 gallons of sewage flowed into the stream. The area of the spill was assessed and no dead or stressed aquatic life was found. Lime was applied to the affected ground area to control odor from the spill. All stream conditions have since returned to normal.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources Environmental Protection Division was notified Sunday afternoon and signs were posted in the area.
