An inmate at the Gwinnett County Detention Center died from a medical emergency early Friday morning.
According to a statement from Deputy Ashley Castiblanco, spokeswoman for the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office, a unit deputy radioed in a medical emergency concerning Deion T. Strayhorn around 5:30 a.m.
"Throughout the course of the medical emergency, our deputy and Emergency Medical Services performed life-saving measures," said Castiblanco in the statement. "Unfortunately, the resident fell victim to his ailment."
The statement did not provide more detail as to what caused Strayhorn's medical emergency. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called to investigate the incident.
Acording to a statement from the GBI, the deputy was first informed about Stayhorn after an inmate in an adjacent cell alerted the deputy that Stayhorn was unresponsive.
An autopsy will be performed by the Gwinnett County Medical Examiner's Office.
Strayhorn was booked into the Gwinnett County Detention Center on November 13, 2020.
