Superintendent search begins for Gwinnett County Schools

The Gwinnett County School System has officially launched its search for a new superintendent.

On Monday, the system posted the announcement and a community input survey. Stakeholders, including students, parents, teachers, school and district staff and Gwinnett County residents and business owners, are encouraged to take the survey and share their thoughts until May 16.

A link to the survey can be found here, or on the Georgia School Boards Association’s website and the Gwinnett County Public Schools’ website.

The survey data will be used by city school board members as they go through the selection process. Interviews are planned for the summer, and a finalist should be named in July. By Georgia law, the Board will make an announcement at least 14 calendar days prior to the meeting at which final action or a vote is to be taken on the position. At that time, information concerning as many as three persons under consideration whom the Board has determined to be the best qualified for the position shall be subject to inspection.

The Board can vote on the appointment at any time after that 14-day period.

The previous superintendent, J. Alvin Wilbanks, had his contract bought out by the school board last summer. Wilbanks had served since 1996 and had chosen not to seek another contract. He is continuing to serve as superintendent until the replacement is named.
