COVID-19 testing sites open Sunday in Habersham, Dawson counties

By Rob Moore, B.J. Williams
As part of the call for increased COVID-19 testing across the state, at least two counties in North Georgia will open mobile test sites on Sunday, April 26. Both Habersham and Dawson counties, working with various health partners, will host the drive-through testing events. Details on both events are listed below.

HABERSHAM COUNTY TESTING

Habersham Medical Center, in partnership with the Georgia Department of Public Health, Habersham County Emergency Services, Habersham County Sheriff’s Office and other partners, will hold free drive-through testing for COVID-19 in Cornelia.

The free testing will be available for anyone who has the following symptoms: fever, cough, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, sore throat, dizziness, or loss of smell and/or taste.

Testing will be conducted from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, April 26, in the old Ingles parking lot at Habersham County Shopping Center, 2160 441 Bypass in Cornelia.

A couple hundred tests are available.

As of Friday, Habersham Medical Center had tested 229 individuals, had five pending results, 63 positive cases, three people in hospitalized quarantine and 60 in self-quarantine/other facilities.

DAWSON COUNTY TESTING

Dawson County’s Emergency Management Agency and the National Guard will open a COVID-19 specimen collection site at Rock Creek Park beginning at 10 a.m. The test site will remain open until 2 p.m. or until test kits run out.

There are two ways to be tested at the Dawson County site:

  •  Patients may go directly to Rock Creek Park and request to be tested without seeing a physician first. The National Guard will collect a specimen for any individual requesting a test. Patients will receive results within 72-96 hours.
  •  Patients are seen by their Primary Care Physician (PCP) OR the Dawson County Public Health Department. These appointments can be tele-med or conducted via phone interview. Then, the PCP or Public Health Department will generate a PUI  number. Once the patient has the PUI number, they can report to the collection site. Patients will receive results within 72-96 hours.

Rock Creek Park is located at 445 Martin Road in Dawsonville.
