UPDATE: A Monday press release from the Office of Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire stated that the two deceased victims were a 58-year-old man and 48-year-old woman. The third victim who was seriously injured is a 70-year-old man. This victim is in serious condition, according to the release.

Two people were killed and a third person critically injured in a structure fire in Auburn Friday morning.

Barrow County Emergency Services firefighters from four stations responded to the scene in the 300 block of Wages Road and determined that there were people inside. According to Cpt. Scott Dakin in a press release, heavy black smoke made visibility impossible in the home.

Firefighters entered the home and found one person, who was rescued and immediately transported to the hospital.

The roof collapsed due to the spread of the fire and crews were pushed back out. They entered again through the bedroom window and found two more victims. When they were taken out of the home, both were already dead.

“[The firefighters] did everything possible to give the victims a chance," Dakin said. "The loss of life is tragic and we are praying for the families that lost loved ones.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
