Two drivers were killed in an early-morning collision Saturday in Barrow County.

Sgt. C.E. Parker with Georgia State Patrol Post 32 in Athens said troopers were called to the scene of the accident on Carl-Midway Road south of Auburn at 12:18 a.m. on July 17.

"The preliminary investigation shows that a silver Ford Mustang was traveling north on Carl-Midway Road when, for unknown reasons, the driver lost control, traveled into the southbound lane and struck a black Toyota Corolla head-on. Both drivers involved in the collision were deceased at the scene upon arrival of first responders," Parker said in an email statement.

Two women in the Ford Mustang and a man in the Toyota Corolla were taken to area hospitals with serious injuries, according to Parker.

The victims have been identified as Jacob H. Peek, 25, of Bogart, the driver of the Mustang, and Zachary C. Smith, 28, of Auburn, the driver of the Corolla.

Parker said the investigation is ongoing with the assistance of the Georgia State Patrol Troop B Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team.
