Gainesville extrusion business suffers extensive damage in Thursday night fire

By B.J. Williams

The Gainesville Fire Department spent about three hours at the scene of a commercial fire on Old Oakwood Road Thursday night.

Division Chief Keith Smith said crews were called to Hydro Extrusion around 7 p.m. and found heavy smoke coming from the outside of the building when they arrived.

"As personnel entered the structure, they found heavy fire coming from a ventilation unit. Crews made an offensive attack and worked quickly to extinguish the fire," Smith said.

Smith said the ventilation unit involved was connected to paint booths located inside the business.

"The fire made its way through the ventilation unit up to the roof of the structure where the ventilation system exits the structure," Smith said. "Damage estimates are unknown at this point, but will be quite costly due to the spread of the fire throughout a large portion of the ventilation system."

Fire crews remained on the scene checking for hot spots and cleaning out smoke and water until about 10 p.m.

Smith said no one was injured.
