Hall County Animal Control has implemented another component of its Community Cat Program; the Barn Cat program is designed to help local businesses control the rodent population, as well as control the county's feral cat population.
The program allows feral or semi-feral cats to be brought to the Hall County Animal Shelter in humane traps. Once they have been spayed/neutered, local businesses can then adopt the felines and bring them to their property to serve as a natural pest control service, hunting mice and other rodents - even snakes.
Officials said these cats aren't meant to be traditional pets, however.
"These are cats that are accustomed to being outdoors, hunting for food. Don't expect them to come in and snuggle with you on the couch. In fact, don't be surprised if you go days without seeing them," said Stephanie List, Hall County Animal Services Program Coordinator.
List said so far, three businesses have adopted barn cats through the new program.
Prospective barn cat owners must fill out an application at the shelter and will be required to provide food, water and shelter for the animals. Follow this link to find out how to apply.
