PACIFIC  PALISADES, Calif. — Former Gainesville High and current University of Georgia standout Spencer Ralston fired a 5-over par 75 on Monday on the first day of the US Amateur at the The Riviera Country Club.

The players will play two rounds of stroke play to try and qualify for the match play. Ralston will try to keep his title hopes alive on Tuesday. He tees off a 8:55 a.m. local time (11:55 ET) at Bel-Air County Club.

Ralston sits 11 shots behind Day 1 leaders Norman Xiong of San Diego, Calif. and Mark Lawrence Jr. of Richmond, Va., who both fired 6-under par 64s. Xiong also played at Riviera while Lawrence played at Bel-Air Country Club.

Ralston struggled most of the day failing to register a single birdie. He bogeyed three of the first eight holes -- Nos. 2, 6, and 8 -- before finally finding a grove with seven consecutive pars. But, he bogeyed Nos. 16 and 18 down the stretch to finish at 75 and tied for 155th place.
