Gwinnett commissioners approve millage rate hike

Gwinnett County commissioners on Monday approved a hike in the county millage rate, the first time the millage rate has gone up since 2013.

Following the final public hearing Monday evening, commissioners approved a millage rate of 13.51 mills for Fiscal Year 2018, an increase in 0.334 mills for Fiscal Year 2017.

"The net increase results from an increase in the County M&O (General Fund) rate of 0.574 mills and a reduction of 0.24 mills in the millage for bond debt," officials said in a news release.

For homes worth $200,000, homeowners will pay "about $21" more in property taxes than last year.

"This millage rate allows us to balance the 2017 general fund budget and set aside funds to begin addressing long-standing hiring and retention issues, especially in law enforcement,” said Chairman Charlotte Nash in a statement.

“Over the last two or three years, we restored funding to critical functions we cut during the recession and provided needed additional funding for the justice system. We have to continue to focus on functions that are essential to keeping our county competitive and maintaining the quality of life that we all value.”

Property tax bills will likely be mailed in August, with payment due in mid-October.
