Georgia Department of Natural Resources seeking volunteers in Northeast Georgia

The Georgia DNR is looking for community volunteers with experienced skill sets to assist in fishing, hunting and wildlife events as well as to assist in teaching wildlife classes.

According DNR Wildlife Resources Division Director, Rusty Garrison, the department is seeking volunteers statewide that might assist with such opportunities as:

- Helping teach stewardship, ethics and safety to youth and adults
- Maintain trail and roadway integrity
- Assist class attendees in building bird or bat houses
- Provide archery and air rifle instruction
- Participate in wildlife surveys
- Put worms or other bait on hooks and take fish off
- Conduct prescribed burns
- Assist with entertainment at special events

"I cannot put into any amount of words my respect and admiration for the good folks that volunteer for our agency," said DNR Wildlife Resources Division Director, Rusty Garrison.

"They give up one of the most valuable of all commodities in our life - their time. They give so much because they want to ensure that Georgia's precious, diverse resources are there for both today's visitors and future generations."

There are some upcoming opportunities for volunteering in northeast Georgia according to Communications and Outreach Specialist with the DNR Wildlife Resources Division, Melissa Cummings, including working with the "Bucket brigade."

"The 'bucket brigade help stock trout streams by going out with the hatchery trucks, loading the fish and take them out to the water by bucket in areas that we can not get the trucks close enough to water," said Cummings.

"Something else coming up is on the fourth Saturday in September. That is National Hunting and Fishing Day. We have the annual Outdoor Adventure Day at Unicoi State Park. There will be tons of activities and several volunteer opportunities. Everything from registering guests where they come in to working the rifle, fishing and other booths."
