DEMOREST — The Piedmont College P-Club inducted three new members to the Sports Hall of Fame on April 9 during Alumni Weekend activities held in Demorest. This year's class includes head softball coach Terry Martin of Toccoa; tennis player Lindsey Hughes of Lexington, S.C., and baseball player Mike Santowski of Cumming.
Now in his 18th season, Martin sports an overall record of 415-267-1. The softball program has been one of the most successful in the NCAA era — earning four conference championships and eight regular season championships — and Martin has been selected Conference Coach of the Year six times. Martin also places high importance on his student-athletes’ success in the classroom. On three separate occasions, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association has honored his teams with a national Top-10 GPA ranking in all of Division III softball.
Tennis standout Lindsey Hughes graduated in 2006 and earned a master’s degree from Piedmont in 2007. Originally from Loganville, she was an All-Conference performer in each of her four seasons, playing number one or number two singles and doubles each year. In 2006, Hughes was honored as an NCCAA All-American in both singles and doubles. She served as a graduate assistant coach for two years after finishing her undergraduate degree. She is currently the Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Affairs, serving as the eligibility and compliance coordinator for Columbia College in South Carolina; and she serves as the Eligibility Chair of the Appalachian Athletic Conference.
Santowski is a 2006 graduate and was a member of Coach Jim Peeples first baseball team in 2003. Santowski was one of the most feared offensive players in the NCAA era and holds numerous career and single season records — despite the fact that he only played three years in the NCAA era. He holds the all-time record for slugging percentage, runs batted in, intentional walks, chances, putouts, and double plays turned. He holds the season record for runs batted in, intentional walks, doubles, and sacrifice flies. In addition to those records, Santowski sits in the top-5 all-time in more than 20 other categories.
Santowski has continued his involvement with Piedmont as a graduate, serving on the College Alumni Association Board of Directors and as a member of the Piedmont Board of Trustees. He has also chaired the Coach Cave Memorial Golf Tournament Committee for several years — an event that raises funds for the athletic department and the Coach Cave Scholarship.
