Piedmont's Ballstadt named region Player of the Year

By AccessWDUN Staff

Following an impressive 2018 campaign, four Piedmont College baseball players were named to the D3baseball.com All-South Region listing, including junior Brady Ballstadt, who took All-South Region Player of the Year honors. Ballstadt was joined on the listing by Sam Carpenter, Buddy Green, and Andrew Burden.

For all but Ballstadt, this marks the first time earning the honor from D3baseball.com as Ballstadt was named to the third team All-South listing in 2017. Piedmont took four spots on the listing while the rest of the USA South conference members in the region placed four on the listing.

Ballstadt earned All-South Region Player of the Year honors after posting a .397 batting average in 2018 and led the USA South in hits with 73, earning conference Player of the Year as well. The junior from Suwanee, Georgia led the team in runs, hits, doubles, and homeruns for the second year in a row and totaled 120 bases, the best in the NCAA era program history, breaking his own record of 98 set a season ago.

Carpenter earned a spot as a starting pitcher on the second team listing alongside relief pitcher Green. Carpenter posted a 7-2 record on the hill in 2018 with a 2.73 ERA through 13 starts. Carpenter posted a team-high 71 strikeouts in 2018 including a career-high 12 against Berea in February.

Green posted a 2.59 ERA as the primary closer for Piedmont with 11 saves on the mound. The senior pitched 24.1 innings striking out 27 batters.

Burden took third team honors at 1B posting the highest batting average on the team this past season with a .405. Burden totaled 68 hits with 47 RBI and earned 36 walks.

The 2018 season marks the seventh year that D3baseball.com has named All-Region teams, with 800 players nominated. The ballot was then made available to SIDs, who voted for a predetermined number of players in their region, as well as D3baseball.com staff and contributors.
