GAINESVILLE - A two-year-old feed the hungry program in Gainesville - the Feeding Project - isn't just for the holiday season anymore.
The program has been concentrating on distributing food to the needy during the month of December since its inception. But will now also include three weekends in the summer, as well, for its Summer Kids Feeding Project, starting with the first Saturday in June. The donation boxes for the first distribution will be assembled this Saturday.
The other two distribution dates are set for July 2 and July 23, with box assembly scheduled for the Saturday before the event at First Baptist Church on Green Street.
Ten different agencies and groups are helping with the project, and the food will be handed out at the Community Food Pantry on Oak Street.
The boxes and bags will each weigh a total of 25 to 30 pounds, and the program's cost is estimated between $6,000 and $8,640.
Program officials say they hope to supply food to 500 to 600 families with children from New Holland, Gainesville and Enota Elementary schools.
