Fire at new Gwinnett Braves stadium

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
LAWRENCEVILLE - Gwinnett County firefighters were dispatched to the new Gwinnett Braves stadium Monday morning during the height of the stormy weather that rolled through the county.

Capt. Thomas Rutledge said a call came in reporting flames and smoke showing from the roof of the complex.

Rutledge said first units found a fire contained to a large air conditioning unit on the roof. The bulk of the fire was put out by workers with portable fire extinguishers, Rutledge said, adding, firefighters used a minimal amount of water to "complete extinguishment of the flames."

Rutledge said the fire was brought under control quickly, however, some smoke did get into the upper floor suites. He said there is no structural damage to the building and there were no injuries.

Officials for the Gwinnett Braves said the fire will have no effect on their Opening Night plans.
