Annual Cracker Fly-In Saturday

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - Parking was at a premium for cars and planes at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport in Gainesville Saturday because of the 36th annual Cracker Fly-In.

The day began with a pancake breakfast at 7:00 and throughout the morning pilots continued to descend on the airport in a variety of aircraft.

The fly-in annually attracts about 100 planes and is sponsored by the local chapter (611) of the Experimental Aircraft Association.

It's not an air show, but the public gets a chance each year to see the planes "up close" between flights when they are tied down on the tarmac. But, they were not on the ground all the time. Throughout the day, their owners were doing fly-arounds of the area, sometimes with guests along for the ride.

Awards are presented as a part of the day-long event. Among them: Best of Show, Best Homebuilt, Best Antique, Best Bi-Plane (two wings), Best Mono-Plane (one wing), Best Warbird, Best Classic, and Best Contemporary.

The Experimental Aircraft Association has over 1000 chapters.
