ATLANTA - The Times in Gainesville was recognized for two awards at the 2003 Georgia Associated Press Association News Awards luncheon Saturday at the Atlanta Airport Marriott Hotel.<br>

The contest was judged by AP member newspaper editors in Illinois. The entries were judged in four classes based on the size of the newspapers.<br>

The Times won third place in sports for its ``Top dog is an elephant'' piece on Damon Evans' being named the University of Georgia's new Athletic Director.<br>

Kevin Prive of The Brunswick News won first place for his, ``High school football coach gets back in game'' story, with The Marietta Daily Journal's David Friedlander taking second for his ``KSU jumps to Division competition'' story.<br>
<br>
The Times' Keith Albertson won third place in Editorial Writing for the ``Dean's crack proves Miller's point about Democrats in South'' piece. First place went to The Marietta Daily Journal and Joe Kirby for ``Perdue unleashes flag furor'' and second place went to the Athens Banner-Herald staff for ``Sad response to silt.''
