The Times wins two AP awards

ATLANTA - The Times in Gainesville was recognized for two awards at the 2003 Georgia Associated Press Association News Awards luncheon Saturday at the Atlanta Airport Marriott Hotel.<br> <br> The contest was judged by AP member newspaper editors in Illinois. The entries were judged in four classes based on the size of the newspapers.<br> <br> The Times won third place in sports for its ``Top dog is an elephant&#39;&#39; piece on Damon Evans&#39; being named the University of Georgia&#39;s new Athletic Director.<br> <br> Kevin Prive of The Brunswick News won first place for his, ``High school football coach gets back in game&#39;&#39; story, with The Marietta Daily Journal&#39;s David Friedlander taking second for his ``KSU jumps to Division competition&#39;&#39; story.<br> <br> The Times&#39; Keith Albertson won third place in Editorial Writing for the ``Dean&#39;s crack proves Miller&#39;s point about Democrats in South&#39;&#39; piece. First place went to The Marietta Daily Journal and Joe Kirby for ``Perdue unleashes flag furor&#39;&#39; and second place went to the Athens Banner-Herald staff for ``Sad response to silt.&#39;&#39;
