The Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced Monday the promotion of Ben Stephenson to Manager of the Toxicology Section of the GBI Crime Lab.

Stephenson will be responsible for overseeing the operations of the section and supervising Toxiology personnel in the new role.

“Ben Stephenson is a skilled scientist and seasoned leader,” GBI Director Chris Hosey said. “For over 20 years, Ben has served the State of Georgia in the Toxicology Section of the GBI Crime Lab. He is a proven expert in his field, and I am confident the Toxicology section will thrive under his leadership.”

Stephenson began his career with the GBI in 2004 as a Crime Lab Scientist in the Toxicology Section at GBI Headquarters.

He was promoted to Toxicology Technical Leader in 2011. In this role, Stephenson served as the primary trainer for all new scientists. He was also tasked with ensuring the Toxicology Section met the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) National Accreditation Board (ANAB) requirements and all scientists met proficiency standards. Additionally, Stephenson was in charge of new method development and research in the Toxicology Section.

In 2024, Stephenson was promoted to Toxicology Assistant Manager. In this position, Stephenson was responsible for assisting the Toxicology Manager with the daily operations of the section and managing Toxicology personnel. Stephenson is a Fellow of the American Board of Forensic Toxicologists (ABFT), according to the GBI.
