The GBI said Paul Walton, 58, of McDonough, was accused of using his city credit card for personal use. He was the Mayor from 2019 to 2023.

Walton turned himself in to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office on May 8.

The Northern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office requested that the GBI Office of Special Investigations investigate Walton in January 2024.

Walton was indicted for 54 counts of financial transaction card fraud, one count of violation of oath of office and one count of felony theft by taking.
