A 10 year-old boy was airlifted to a hospital in Greenville, S.C. following a dirt bike accident in Stephens County Saturday.

The Stephens County Sheriff’s Office said in a social media post deputies and Stephens County emergency services responded to the scene near East Leatherwood Road just after 4 p.m.

The child in the accident was identified as Bentley Chappelear, who reportedly sustained injuries to his head. Chappelear remains in the hospital as of last report, but is making progress in his condition, according to SCSO.

The department says the Chappelear family has ties to the Stephens County and Franklin County Sheriff’s Offices.

“Bentley is the son of one of our Franklin County Sheriff's Office brothers, Randy Chappelear, and the nephew of one of our own Stephens County deputies, Aaron Chappelear,” the post said. “Our hearts go out to Randy, his wife Courtney, their son Bentley, and the entire Chappelear family. We continue to lift up Bentley and his family in prayer, and we are so proud of Bentley's strength in this scary time.”

SCSO said the family’s needs have shifted in light of the accident, and financial support is appreciated. A GoFundMe page to support the family can be found here
