Franklin County man arrested for alleged double arson

By Caleb Hutchins Assistant News Director

State officials are releasing information now about a Franklin County man who was arrested earlier this month in connection with a pair of house fires in the west end of the county.

Georgia State Fire Marshal's Office Investigator Brian Smith said James Anthony Stamps, age 53 of Carnesville, was arrested on June 7 on two counts of first-degree arson.

The fires in question reportedly happened on May 15. A Franklin County Sheriff's Office deputy spotted the first house fire on Old Federal Road. Less than an hour later, a second was reported on J.F. Shirley Road.

"During our investigation, we found that both residences were intentionally set (on fire) and after interviews and other investigative techniques with the sheriff's office, we were able to make an arrest," Smith said.

Both homes were abandoned according to Smith and no one was injured. Stamps remains in the Franklin County Jail.
