Alleged Apalachee shooter follows father's suit, seeks trial location change

The teenage boy accused of shooting and killing four people and injuring nine others at Apalachee High School in Barrow County nearly seven months ago is now requesting to change the location of his trial.

Colt Gray's attorney, Alonso Kraft, Jr., filed in Barrow County Superior Court Wednesday to have the trial moved to another county. He said the request was due to extensive media coverage and attention on the trial in Barrow County.

"Gray will not be able to receive a fair trial in Barrow County due to the extensive pre-trial publicity and the overall state of feelings of Barrow County residents towards him," the filing said. "Prospective jurors have already received an extraordinary amount of information about the case, whether factual or not, whether admissible under the rules of evidence or not."

The motion came 10 days after attorneys for Gray's father, Colin Gray, who is also facing dozens of criminal charges himself for allegedly allowing Colt access to the gun used in the shooting, filed a similar motion to request a change of venue. A hearing is scheduled for April 17 for a judge to hear and potentially rule on Colin Gray's request.

No hearing has been set yet for a potential hearing on Colt Gray's request.

Gray has been held in an undisclosed regional youth detention center since reportedly being apprehended inside the school on September 4, 2024. He faces a list of charges including murder, aggravated assault and cruelty to children.

No date has been set for the start of either Colt or Colin Gray's trials.
