A Commerce woman and former Athens-Clarke County Police officer is facing multiple charges of sexual exploitation of children.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigations released a statement Wednesday saying Amber Nicole Ferguson, age 33, turned herself in to the Jackson County Jail at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday.

"Ferguson...is accused of taking sexually explicit photographs of a child," the GBI statement said. "The City of Commerce Police Department requested GBI assistance on Sunday, December 1, 2024, after a complaint was filed by a family member."

Ferguson faces two counts of sexual exploitation of children.

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department confirmed Wednesday afternoon that Ferguson was employed with the department from December 4, 2023 until January 14, 2025.

No other details about the case have been released, but GBI officials say the investigation is ongoing and anyone with information on the case is asked to contact the GBI's regional investigative office in Athens by calling 706-552-2309.
