Pedestrian killed by train Saturday identified as Gainesville man

Hall County authorities have now identified the person struck and killed by a train early Saturday morning as a Gainesville man.

A release from the Hall County Sheriff's Office Tuesday morning identified the person killed as Justin Keith Bennett, age 26.

The sheriff's office has not indicated why Bennett was on the tracks, but the initial investigation reportedly showed he did not respond to the train's conductor sounding his horn and applying brakes.

Authorities say a pedestrian was hit and killed by a train in Gainesville early Saturday morning.

A release from the Hall County Sheriff's Office Monday said they found a man dead at the tracks near the intersection of Dorsey Street and Industrial Boulevard around 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

"According to the initial investigation, the unidentified man was walking on the tracks, away from the approaching train, when he was hit," Monday's release from the sheriff's office said. "THe conductor of the Amtrak train sounded the train's horn and applied brakes, but the man did not react."

Investigators have not been able to identify the victim as of Monday morning.
