Special election to be held May 21 for vacant Gainesville City Council seat

By Austin Eller News Director

A special election will be held on May 21 to fill the currently vacant Ward 4 seat on the Gainesville City Council.

Gainesville City Attorney Abb Hayes made the announcement during a Gainesville City Council Work Session Thursday morning.

The announcement follows the December resignation and subsequent January passing of longtime Gainesville City Councilman George Wangemann, who most recently held the Ward 4 seat.

Wangemann's resignation left the seat unfilled with about two years remaining on the term.

Hayes said the city was working with the Hall County Elections Office on a resolution related to the special election, which he expects will be ready for the Gainesville City Council Voting Session on Tuesday, Feb. 6. The finalized resolution will include information about advanced voting, registration, qualifying and more.
