Most residents and businesses have a tendency to crank up their furnaces and heaters during wintry conditions in northern Georgia, but there's always a chance that using heating equipment could lead to the possibility of a fire in your home.
Forsyth County Fire and Emergency Services officials are joining most departments in the region in reminding residents about what can be done to prevent fires from happening, while keeping warm through the winter.
- Install and maintain carbon monoxide detectors throughout your home.
- Be certain vents for dryers, furnaces, fireplaces and stoves are clear from debris and working properly.
- Plug only one (1) heating element into a specific wall outlet at a time.
- Keep all heating elements at LEAST 3 feet away from anything that could burn (clothing, paper, fabric, etc.).
- Have a qualified professional inspect and clean your chimney and vents at LEAST once a year, and before winter seasons.
