North Carolina man arrested after fleeing from authorities in Towns County

By Austin Eller News Director

A man from Hayesville, North Carolina, was arrested Wednesday in Towns County on a variety of charges, including charges connected to his attempt to flee from police in December.

The Towns County Sheriff's Office said in a social media post that Wayne Bruce Odom, 44, was booked at the Towns County Jail.

The investigation began on Dec. 10 at the Sunoco convenience store on Highway 17 at the North Carolina border. Deputies attempted to initiate a traffic stop on Odom during a patrol and drug surveillance operation, but he then fled into North Carolina. Towns County deputies terminated the pursuit over safety concerns.

The agency then received a tip on Wednesday claiming that he was working at a business in the county. Deputies went to that business and found and arrested Odom.

Odom attempted to escape during his arrest and was charged with obstruction as a result. Authorities performed a field search on Odom, finding methamphetamine and other drug-related objects.

He was charged with the following:

  • Felony possession of methamphetamine
  • Possession and use of drug-related objects
  • Willful obstruction of law enforcement officers
  • Felony fleeing or attempting to elude police officers
  • Seatbelt violation

"Sheriff Ken Henderson commends the deputies and investigators for their quick response and apprehension of Odom," the social media post said. "He would also like to extend his appreciation to the citizens who called with information concerning the location of the suspect."
