White County and Hall County schools, among others, are adjusting their release schedules this afternoon in anticipation of inclement weather and severe thunderstorm warnings.
A line of “intense thunderstorms” is developing across Tennessee, northern Alabama and northern Mississippi, according to Meteorologist Keith Stellman with the National Weather Service. Due to the impending inclement weather, school systems in area counties are adjusting their release schedules.
Hall County elementary schools will be released 15 minutes early this afternoon, and all afternoon activities and clubs have been canceled.
All schools in White County were dismissed at 1:30 p.m. Monday.
Students in Dawson County will be released 45 minutes early this afternoon. Grades eight through 12 will release at 1:45 p.m. Grades six and seven will release at 2 p.m. Elementary schools will release at 2:15 p.m. All afternoon activities and clubs have been canceled in Dawson County.
All after-school activities and clubs in Banks County have been canceled.
“We are expecting some severe winds with the storms, the atmosphere is getting pretty unstable through the day,” Stellman said. “And that will result in the likelihood that we'll see severe storms, especially in northeastern Georgia. Severe winds are running for us at 58 miles per hour. But what we've known and what we've seen over the past few weeks is that it only takes about 50-mile-an-hour winds to start knocking down trees and power lines. But today, the potential for stronger than even 50, 60 and possibly even up to 70 exists within that line as it comes through.”
The National Weather Service anticipates the storm to hit between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., placing an emphasis on the earlier portion of that time slot.
