Friends of Gainesville Parks and Greenways unveils new name

By Hamilton Keener Anchor / Reporter

The nonprofit organization Friends of Gainesville Parks and Greenways announces it will be known as the Gainesville Parks and Recreation Foundation.

Since 1996 the organization has helped fund nearly $820,000 in projects and advocated for another $5.6 million in capital projects, park improvements and grants for Gainesville Parks and Recreation according to a press release.

“The transition from “Friends” to “Foundation” was driven by a desire to capture the full extent of our mission and vision in our name,” said Foundation President, Hannah Warner. “This rebranding effort aims to inspire greater involvement from individuals, businesses and the entire community so we can spearhead impactful initiatives that shape the parks for future generations.”

The foundation has organized the annual Butterfly release at Longwood Park for the past 25 years. This year's release set for Sunday, September 24 will benefit Park 2 Park which is the latest initiative from them.

The Gainesville Parks and Recreation Foundation describes Park 2 Park connectivity as a campaign to create walkways that connect the entire parks system.
