Former portion of Lanier Islands Parkway renamed after GDOT work

By Caleb Hutchins Assistant News Director

A roadway that was once part of what is now Lanier Islands Parkway in the Buford area has now been renamed by Hall County commissioners.

The commission voted Wednesday evening to rename the small stretch of road as Old Lanier Islands Drive.

"When Lanier Islands Parkway was re-aligned, it left a section off, which left it as an unnamed road on our roadmaps. It needs a name," Hall County Director of Planning and Development Randi Doveton said after Wednesday's meeting. "To avoid confusion, it was proposed for it to be Old Lanier Islands Drive."

The roadway was once part of Georgia 347 before a Georgia Department of Transportation project re-routed the road into a roundabout at the intersection of New Bethany Road in 2018. Old Lanier Islands Drive now splits off of Lee Circle and runs parallel with Lanier Islands Parkway before dead-ending shortly after Whidby Road.

Doveton said residents on the newly named road will have their addresses changed accordingly.
