A man and woman from Cleveland were arrested in what Towns County authorities called a major drug bust Friday near Hiawassee.
In a social media post, Towns County Sheriff's Office officials said a search during a traffic stop at the intersection of U.S. 76 and Ga. 17 led to the discovery of "a substantial amount" of methamphetamine. Authorities said they believe the driver, Anderson David Dowdy, age 24, was a supplier who was delivering the pre-packaged drugs to dealers in both Towns County and neighboring Clay County, North Carolina.
Dowdy was arrested and charged with possession and trafficking of meth as well as the possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. His passenger, Shannon Nicole Philbeck, also age 24, was also arrested on drug charges.
In the statement, Towns County Sheriff Ken Henderson said he was pleased with the arrests and that the investigation into Dowdy's activities in the area is ongoing.
