Seven families displaced following apartment fire in Gainesville

No injuries were reported in a fire that tore through an apartment structure in Gainesville Monday afternoon, displacing seven families.

The Gainesville Fire Department responded at approximately 2:51 p.m. Monday to reports of a structure fire at the Retreat at McEver apartment complex, according to information provided by the department.

Crews arrived by 2:56 p.m. to find a four-story building with smoke and flames emitting from one side of the building. At that time, crews began pulling hose lines and evacuating civilians.

Responders were able to battle the blaze and put it out by 3:09 p.m. Afterward, they began salvaging and overhauling to ensure there was no extensional damage to the walls, floors or attics of the building.

Other agencies also reportedly responded to the incident, including Georgia Power in order to secure power for the building.

The American Red Cross was also notified for assistance due to seven families being displaced from the damage. There were no reported injuries of civilians or crewmembers.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Fire Marshal’s Office.
