An investigation is underway after a person was found dead Monday morning after a fire at an apartment in Cornelia.
According to a press release from the Cornelia Police Department, the Cornelia Police Department and Fire Department both responded at about 10 a.m. to 837 Main Street, Apartment D in reference to a house fire.
The landlord of the property had reportedly gone to the unit to speak with the tenant and noticed smoke and fire damage on the outside of the residence. The landlord used their master key to check on the tenant and discovered that the inside of the apartment had been burned. The landlord then called 911.
The fire department determined that the fire had been extinguished, but human remains were found inside.
The State Fire Marshal's Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation were asked to aid in the investigation.
No other information was released.
