By Austin Eller News Director

A man from Duluth was killed in an officer-involved shooting Saturday evening after he allegedly lunged at an officer while holding a knife.

A press release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Jonathan Daniel Laubscher, 28, was shot by a Gwinnett County Police officer at a home on Oak Hampton Way in Duluth.

Police responded to the home at about 7:33 p.m. after Laubscher’s mother called 911, stating he was armed with a knife and had threatened to kill her. When officers arrived at the home, they found Laubscher with a knife in hand.

Officers gave Laubscher verbal commands to drop the knife, but he did not comply and continued moving toward them. Officers tased Laubscher but he still did not drop the knife, according to the GBI.

Laubscher then allegedly lunged at an officer with the knife in hand. The officer being lunged at shot Laubscher. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

No officers were injured in the incident.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation of the incident. The case file will then be turned over to the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s office for review.
