By Steve Winslow Anchor/Reporter

A Madison County native has become the latest inspector named to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Trent Hillsman has been appointed to provide oversight to several Investigative Division work units statewide, including the Appalachian Regional Drug Enforcement Office, Special Operations Unit, Commercial Gambling unit and Investigative Computer Services.

Inspector Hillsman started his law enforcement career in 1997 with the University of Georgia Police Department, while obtaining a Bachelors of Science degree in Sociology from Piedmont University in Demorest in 1999. Hillsman would later be hired by Madison County Sheriff's Office as a deputy later that year, before joining the GBI in 2001. Hillsman then went on to receive a Master of Public Safety Administration degree from Columbus State University while working with the GBI, in 2020.

In his time with the GBI, Inspector Hillsman has served as special agent for their regional investigative offices in Douglas and Athens, and the GBI's Special Operations Unit before being promoted to Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Special Operations Unit. Prior to his current promotion, Hillsman was Special Agent in Charge of the Appalachian Regional Drug Enforcement office in 2019.  He is also a senior member of the GBI's Bomb Disposal Unit, a member of the Peer Support Team, and team leader of the Special Enforcement Team.

GBI Director Chris Hosey says in a press release, "Inspector Trent Hillsman is an excellent leader and experienced agent. It is my honor to appoint him to this position and I am confident that Inspector Hillsman will guide and support the work units he oversees well through his extensive experience and unwavering committment."
