By Austin Eller News Director

A suspect was recently arrested after two people were found shot to death at a home in Winder on March 5, 2022.

A press release from the Winder Police Department said Martell Lamont Scott, 25, of Kansas City, Missouri, was charged in the deaths of Christina Smith, 30, and Marcus Gardner, 29.

Scott was arrested on March 14 in Kansas City for theft by taking motor vehicle. Scott was allegedly driving Gardner's 2005 Ford Escape at the time of his arrest in Missouri. The release said the Winder Police Department had obtained the warrant early in the investigation after it was discovered Gardner's vehicle was missing.

A Winder Police detective and a Georgia Bureau of Investigation agent traveled to Kansas City following Scott's arrest to conduct further investigation. Officers obtained arrest warrants for Scott on March 18 on two counts of murder, two counts of felony murder and one count of possessing a firearm during the commission of a crime. Scott was transported back to Georgia by the Barrow County Sheriff's Office and was booked into the Barrow County Detention Center.

An investigation revealed Scott was an acquaintance of Gardner. Scott had allegedly been living with Smith and Gardner for several weeks prior to the murders.

Multiple agencies were involved in the arrest and investigation, including the Winder Police Department, Georgia Bureau of Investigation Athens Regional Office, the Barrow County Sheriff's Office and the Kansas City Career Criminal Squad, which includes Missouri State Highway Patrol, Kansas City Police Department and Independence, Missouri Police Department.

The investigation was still underway at last report.
