Gas jumps across Georgia more than 13 cents in a week

Gas prices just keep continuing to jump in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine at the end of last week.

Monday’s gas report by AAA says that Georgia’s average gas has gone up 13 cents more than a week ago, 32 cents more than last month, and 94 cents more than this time last year. Georgia motorists are now paying an average price of $3.50 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline.

The highest prices in Georgia can be seen in the Southeast Coastal Region. Drivers there are already paying more than $3.60 per gallon.

In Hall County, the average price is $3.46 per gallon. Habersham County has the lowest average price in our area, with an average of $3.43 per gallon.

“Georgians continue to feel pain at the pumps,” said Montrae Waiters, spokeswoman with AAA. “Industry professionals warn gas prices are likely to climb even higher if the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues.”

Since last Monday, the national average for a gallon of regular gasoline has increased by 7 cents to $3.60. Pump prices will likely continue to rise as crude prices continue its upward trend.

At the close of Thursday’s formal trading session, crude oil increased by 71 cents to settle at $92.81 after climbing above $100 per barrel. Crude prices surged after Russia launched its military invasion of Ukraine. As the conflict escalates with more sanctions and retaliatory actions, the oil markets will likely respond by continuing to increase the price of crude oil to reflect more risk of disruption to tight global oil supplies.

Georgia still maintains one of the lowest averages of gas across the nation at $3.50. In California, the state with the highest gas prices in the country, motorists are paying $4.82 on average.
