Kidnapping suspect identified in Banks Co. officer-involved shooting

A kidnapping suspect involved in a shoot out early Tuesday morning during which a Banks County Sheriff's deputy was injured has been identified as a North Carolina man.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Robert Brodie, 32, of Henderson, North Carolina was wanted for kidnapping in that state. Brodie had his female victim in the car with him in the parking lot of the Super 8 Motel in Banks Crossing around 2 a.m. when they were approached by a deputy.

Brodie and the victim were asleep in the vehicle when the deputy attempted to wake them. Brodie pulled out a gun and shot the victim, and Brodie and two deputies exchanged gunfire.

Brodie was shot several times and a deputy was shot in the hand and vest. Brodie, the victim and the deputy were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The deputy was treated and released. Brodie and the victim are still receiving treatment.

Charges are pending against Brodie from the Banks County Sheriff's Office. The GBI is conducting an independent investigation.

A shootout in Banks County Tuesday morning leaves three people injured, including a deputy.

A Banks County deputy was on routine patrol when he spotted a suspicious vehicle sitting in the parking lot of the Super 8 Motel in Banks Crossing. According to the Banks County Sheriff’s Office, it is believed that the person in the car is a person of interest in an out-of-state kidnapping. His victim was still with him in the vehicle. According to the Sheriff's Office, “During the encounter, the suspect brandished a weapon and abruptly shot his victim, in which deputies responded with gunfire."

During that exchange of gunfire, an officer was shot in the hand and vest. The suspect also received multiple gunshot wounds and the female victim also had a wound from being shot by the suspect. All three were taken to the hospital. No information on their condition is available at this time.

Banks County Sheriff Carlton Speed requested assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The case has been turned over to the GBI for investigation.
