One person life-flighted after accident in Habersham County

A serious accident in Habersham County Monday required one injured person to be life-flighted from the scene. Two others were taken by ambulance for their injuries.

The accident occurred when one vehicle rear-ended another on GA 17, just south of the GA 105 intersection around 5:40 p.m. on Monday.

James Hadley Cox, age 71 of Sautee, said he “blacked out” and did not realize traffic in front of him was going at a slower speed. He did not stop in time to avoid hitting the vehicle in front of him, which had two people inside. When his vehicle, a Land Rover, struck their Toyota Avalon, the Avalon spun around, traveling off the roadway and onto the shoulder of the road. It struck a road sign and a fallen tree before going down an embankment.

The vehicle Cox was driving also went off the road and into a ditch.

Units from the Habersham County Emergency Services and Sheriff’s Department, along with Georgia State Patrol were dispatched and responded. One person had to be extricated from their vehicle and two others had to be put into a rescue basket to get them up to the roadway. Air Life transported one patient to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. The other two injured were taken by Habersham County Emergency Services.

The couple in the second vehicle have been identified as Larry Ray Dodd, age 80 of Clarkesville, and Evelyn Williams, age 85, also of Clarkesville.

There have not been any updates as to the injuries or conditions of all three involved.

Cox has been charged with following too closely.
