An elderly woman in her late 90s went on a walk at about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday morning before deputies found her fallen at around 5 a.m. according to officials.

The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office reports that family members discovered at about 4:30 a.m. she went out for a walk on Goshen Mountain Road in the Batesville community.

Sheriff’s Lieutenant Matt Wurtz said she made it about 50 yards down the road and then fell in the nearby woods, where she remained for several hours with temperatures in the mid-to-low teens.

“There was about 15 to 20 feet of grass, then woods and she was over in the wood-line,” Wurtz said. “She was alert, conscious, and breathing but very cold.”

The temperature at the time was 12-degrees.

The woman was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center Habersham for care.
