Habersham County School Superintendent to retire in April

By Steve Winslow Anchor/Reporter

A change is coming with Habersham County's school system leadership in the months ahead.

Current Superintendent of Habersham County School System Matthew Cooper announced his retirement plans, effective April 1, 2025, after 13 years in the position.  Cooper made the announcement during the Tuesday evening Board of Education's monthly meeting.

Cooper has been involved in educational services for 30 years, and says he is leaving, "...under good terms," with the Board of Education (BOE).  Further details behind his decision to retire at this time were not reported during the meeting.

Cooper will be replaced in April by current Habersham County Assistant Superintendent of Schools Patrick Franklin, who has been in that role for more than two years. Franklin was approved by the county's BOE to replace Cooper during Tuesday's meeting.
