The Gwinnett Stripers stepped in earlier this week after a local high school baseball field was vandalized.
The minor league team got the call Tuesday after a staff member, who is also a local baseball coach, told them about the damage done by a truck.
"The pictures were making their rounds of what happened with the vandalism," said McClain Murphy, sports turf director for the Stripers. "So he reached out, sent them over to me and wanted to know if there was anything we could do to help out, and it was an immediate yes."
The damage was substantial.
"The bulk of the damage was the infield dirt," he said. "A lot of donuts and stuff had been done out here with the truck, and some grass damage as well in the infield and outfield, but nothing as significant as the dirt."
Murphy said they assessed the damage and tilled the infield Tuesday afternoon, as well as ordering new sod. The field was brought back to life Wednesday and Murphy said they spent between six to eight hours making repairs. He also said many staff members and other local coaches volunteered in the process.
The school's sports Twitter account posted that the perpetrator had been caught.
