Authorities release names of officers involved in deadly Athens shooting

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department has released the names of four police officers involved in a deadly officer involved shooting Thursday.

According to a press release from the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, Senior Police Officer Jamie Jones fired a less-lethal 40mm sponge round in the incident. 

Three ACCPD officers discharged firearms. These officers are Sergeant Tim Johnson, Officer First Class Dustin Tilley and Officer Jerold Rodgers. 

Timothy Daniel Statham, 37, of Winterville was shot after reportedly threatening officers while making references to having a gun. Statham was later pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured in the incident.

A car stolen in Jackson County began a search for a suspect that ended with a deadly shooting in Athens-Clarke County Thursday.

Athens-Clarke County Police attempted to stop the driver of the vehicle after it was spotted in their area, however, he refused. Instead, he drove the car into a ditch and fled in the area of Newton Bridge Road and Fritz Mar Lane. The driver later identified as Timothy Daniel Statham, age 37, ran into the woods on foot.

According to a press release from the department, officers surrounded the area and tried to negotiate with the man. However, Statham refused to surrender and continued threatening officers, making references to having a gun. Officers tried less-lethal attempts to try and control the situation, but the man continued to advance towards officers. He also continued to refer to having a weapon. As a result, several Athens-Clarke County Police Department officers fired, striking the man.

The man was declared dead at the scene. No firearm was recovered following his death.

Statham had felony warrants out of Jackson and Barrow counties.

No officers were injured as a result of the incident.

According to police, the Georgia Bureau of Investigations will handle an investigation into the incident. The involved officers have been placed on administrative assignment pending a review of the case.
