State Senator Bill Cowsert (R-Athens) joined WDUN’s The Martha Zoller Show Tuesday to discuss his upcoming run for Georgia Attorney General.
The role is currently filled by Chris Carr, who previously announced he would run for Governor of Georgia in 2026. Cowsert has served 10 terms on the State senate and has practiced law in Athens for 40 years.
Cowsert said some of his areas of focus include sex trafficking, gang activities, immigration and terrorism. He highlighted that in recent years state legislation has increased the power of the Attorney General to best cooperate with federal and state entities to best prosecute in those cases.
“There are a lot of areas where it really is best to have a statewide approach, because these aren't just little local actions taking place,” Cowsert said. “They're coordinated activities that are statewide, and therefore they're best to be prosecuted statewide, but with coordination with the District Attorney. So it's been intentional on the legislature's part, and it's something that I look forward to participating in.”
Cowsert is a part of several state senate committees, including the Regulated Industries and Utilities, Judiciary, Reapportionment and Redistricting, Finance, Health and Human Services and Insurance and Labor. He said he has been committed to public service through those roles.
“I'm the Chairman of the Regulated Industries Committee, which is a very interesting committee that handles all different types of matters, everything from regulating power to phones to alcohol, gambling,” Cowsert said. “A number of other issues come before our committee. So it's been a really stimulating public service, learning about a lot of different areas and trying to contribute to making the state a better place.”
